The Simians of Swing, the masters of hard bop, the cool dudes of
the jazz noir.
From the moment one holds the album sleeve to the listening of the tunes, it
is a journey of discovery and pure delight. It's about being immersed in a
world of jazz with a twist by these scarily talented musicians.
The Simians reminisce and project the world of comic books with a blast!
The stories are told in the jazz language. Special mention to Valentin Ramon
for the illustrations and artwork on the album. Impressive!
These guys breathe music, they know how to speak the language of those
dark and dirty rooms wrapped up in an intense aroma of jazz and, what’s
more, they are not afraid to show it!
All compositions on the album are the work of trumpet master Andy ‘Monkey’
Davies and bass guru Lorenzo ‘Lama’ Bassignani. The album features some
of the most talented musicians the jazz scene can offer like Sam Leak and
Ivo Neame on piano. Luca Boscagin and Ant Law on guitar but also Saleem
Raman on drums, Polly Gibbons on vocals on the memorably languid
“Gangster in Love”
Standing out a mile are tracks like “Vampires in the Attic”, strong and fast,
“Soviet Supreme”, a slow melancholic ballad, led by the master himself,
"Freddie Brek" is a funkyesque uptempo beat track with Davies on swinging
The Simians tell us the “album is not for the faint-hearted. If (one) makes it to
the end…” it is hoped one has enjoyed it.
Well, here’s the thing: I thoroughly enjoyed it, in fact… I am going to go back
A majestic debut album!
